Hens Return to Win Column with 6-1 Victory at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Delaware women’s tennis team snapped a two-match losing skid Saturday with a commanding 6-1 win at George Mason.

The Blue Hens swept doubles play to earn the team point and were led once again by senior Dorothy Safron (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Carmen Lai (Shatin, Hong Kong).  The duo collected an 8-1 top-flight victory over Brittany Pilkington and Ashley Delaney.

Delaware (6-7) continued tough play into singles action, winning five of six matches played against Mason (4-11).  The lone loss came in a three-set match in No. 6 singles.

Sophomore Danea Jonjic’ (Split, Croatia) tallied a 6-1, 6-2 win against Pilkington in No. 1 singles while Safron earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Delaney in the No. 2 spot.

In the third flight, Lai registered a 6-2, 6-3 win versus Marijke Boers.  Sophomore Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia) and senior Olivia Heim (Gibsonia, Pa.) also recorded victories in No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.  Naumova defeated Olivia Lacy-Thompson, 6-4, 6-0, while Heim picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Mina Saygi.

HEN SCRATCHINGS
     ·  Dorothy Safron became just the fifth player in UD women’s tennis history to collect 70 career singles victories.
     ·  Safron is 70-40 during her time with the Blue Hens, a mark good for fifth all-time.  Current head coach Laura LeRoy Travis (1985-89) is fourth with a mark of 73-12.
     ·  Olivia Heim improved her career singles mark to 60-45, which places her tied for 11th in school history with Megan Doran (2008-11).
     ·  Safron has paired with Carmen Lai for a career 28-21 doubles record, good to tie for third in school history with Kristin Wasniewski and Rachel Dencker (1997-00).
     ·  The Blue Hens are 40-35 in doubles action this season.
