PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Delaware women’s tennis team picked up six victories Friday as the Blue Hens were one of 15 teams to participate in the 17th Annual Cissie Leary Classic, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

Olivia Heim (Gibsonia, Pa.) picked up her 50th career singles victory after defeating Temple’s Carly Bohman, 6-3, 6-1, in Flight B action.   The senior then took a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Cornell’s Sara Perelman.  She will compete Saturday in the Singles Second Round Consolation against Katya Salas from Richmond.

In Singles Flight A play, sophomore Carmen Lai (Shatin, Hong Kong) defeated her first round opponent, Tiffany Cheng (Bowdoin), 7-5, 6-2 before falling to Penn’s Sonya Latycheva, 6-1, 6-2.  She will also take part in Saturday’s consolation bracket against the winner of the match between teammate Dorothy Safron and Anna Abadias (Richmond).

The Blue Hens collected four wins in doubles play from Lai/Safron, Heim/Kim Milla, Christina Harrington/Abby Martinez and Nataliya Naumova, who paired with Penn’s Brigitte Desnoes.
Lai/Safron continue doubles play in the championship bracket while the other three pairs moved to the consolation bracket.
Delaware Head Coach Laura Travis – “Today was a good measuring stick to see where we are as we start the season.  It’s helpful to see our players in both doubles and singles action multiple times in one day.  Capturing match play on video helps clarify how to be productive and what we need to take home to practice.”

  • The Cissie Leary Classic continues Saturday at 8 a.m.
  • Dorothy Safron snapped a career-best seven match winning streak.
  • Safron collected her 50th career doubles victory, which ties her for 12th all-time in Delaware history with current head coach Laura LeRoy Travis (1985-89).
  • Olivia Heim posted her 50th career singles win.  She is 19th all-time in Delaware history behind Jessica Wilkes (1999-03) and Sari Shuster, who are tied for 17th with 51 career victories.
