Four Blue Hens Post 2-0 Records to Advance To Respective Flight Semifinals at SJU Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Delaware women’s tennis team will have four players vie for a flight championship Sunday as the Blue Hens went 11-3 in singles action at the Saint Joseph’s Invitational.

Senior Dorothy Safron (New York, N.Y.) led UD in Flight 1 with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Loyola’s Katelyn Hissong followed by a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Drexel’s Nicole Pivonka.  Safron will face off against Fairfield’s Monica Yajima in the Flight 1 semifinals at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Senior Olivia Heim (Gibsonia, Pa.) advanced to the Flight 2 semifinals after defeating Loyola’s Ania Krawiec, 6-1, 6-1 and Villanova’s Linley Busby, 6-3, 7-6 (4).  Heim opens play Sunday at 8:30 a.m. against Drexel’s Marcela Rosales.

Also going 2-0 on the day was junior Christina Harrington (Millersville, Md.), who picked up a 6-0, 4-6, 10-6 victory over Brittini Jentz from Saint Francis (Pa.) before going 6-2, 6-2 against SJU’s Alex Zachem.  Harrington will take on Drexel’s Erin Bowsher at 8:30 a.m. in the Flight 3 semifinals.

Junior Abby Martinez (Winter Haven, Fla.) is currently riding a career-best four-match winning streak following victories over Lafayette’s Jordyn Spellberg and Villanova’s Hayley Sanzone.  Martinez defeated both Spellberg and Sanzone by scores of 6-2, 6-2.  She looks to continue her winning streak with a 10 a.m. match against Drexel’s Alex Bell.

     ·      The SJU Invitational wraps up Sunday with play beginning at 8:30 a.m.
     ·      Dorothy Safron holds a career record of 62-33, a mark that ties for eighth in Delaware history with Karen Greenstein (1996-00) and Amanda Campbell (2005-09).
     ·      Olivia Heim is 52-36 in a Delaware uniform, a record good for 17th in UD history.
     ·      Delaware is 30-24 in singles play this season.
     ·      First-year Hen Abby Martinez has won a career-best four straight matches.
     ·      Martinez holds a career-record of 5-5 in a Delaware uniform.
