Blue Hens Send Off Seniors With 5-2 Women's Tennis Win Over Drexel

NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware women’s tennis team finished regular season action Saturday afternoon with its third straight victory as the Blue Hens defeated Drexel, 5-2, at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.

The Blue Hens swept doubles play to earn the first point of the afternoon.  Senior Dorothy Safron (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Carmen Lai (Shatin, Hong Kong) led off with an 8-3 win over Zeynep Mafa and Marcela Rosales. 

The final two doubles matches came with close victories as senior Olivia Heim (Gibsonia, Pa.) and junior Kim Milla (México City, México) defeated Nicole Pivonka and Erin Bowsher, 8-7 (5) while sophomore Danea Jonjic’ (at left; Split, Croatia) and junior Christina Harrington (Millersville, Md.) outdid Lea Winkler and Fiorella Coria, 8-7 (4).

In singles action, the Blue Hens picked up wins in the top two flights as Jonjic’ defeated Mafa, 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 in No. 1 singles and Safron beat Marcela Rosales, 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Nataliya Naumova (Moscow, Russia) registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bowsher in the No. 4 spot.  Milla came from behind to close out Coria, 1-6, 6-1, 10-4 in the sixth flight.

With the win, Delaware improves to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association.  The Dragons fall to 2-2 in league action while finishing the regular season with a mark of 13-4.

     ·  Prior to the match, the Blue Hens honored seniors Dorothy Safron and Olivia Heim.
     ·  Safron is 72-40 during her time with the Blue Hens, a mark good for fifth all-time.  Current head coach Laura LeRoy Travis (1985-89) is fourth with a mark of 73-12.
     ·  Danea Jonjic’ and Safron and have each won three straight matches.
     ·  Safron paired with Carmen Lai for their third straight doubles victory. 
     ·  Safron and Lai hold a career 30-21 doubles record, good for third all-time in school history.
     ·  The Blue Hens are 86-86 in singles action and 45-36 in doubles play this season.
