NOROLK, Va. – The outcomes were split Wednesday afternoon as the University of Delaware women’s tennis team cruised to a 7-0 victory over Norfolk State University while the men’s squad fell in a 4-3 heartbreaker to the Spartans at the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Blue Hen women’s team (7-2) saw six 6-0 sets throughout singles action.  Dorothy Safron swept Yvonne Kamegne, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 2 singles for her fourth straight victory while Carmen Lai posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Laura Gutierrez in the three spot.

Olivia Heim also put up a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Maryna Kariuk in the fifth flight and Christina Harrington (at right), playing in singles action for the first time this season, picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Rebecca Graff in the sixth slot.

In the top flight, Danea Jonjic’ saw a closer match against Andrea Macchiavello, but was still victorious at 6-3, 6-4.

Nataliya Naumova also saw tighter sets with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Mafalda Lhorca.

In doubles play, Safron and Lai teamed up for an 8-7 (8-6) win against Macchiavello and Lhorca in the top flight.  Naumova/Harrington and Jonjic’/Kim Milla each pulled out 8-3 victories over the Spartans.

“This was our first time playing outdoors in a long time, but our players adjusted well,” stated Delaware head coach Laura Travis.

The UD women return to action Friday against UNCW at Old Dominion.

On the men’s side, the Blue Hens (4-6) lost their third heartbreaker to the tune of 3-4. 

In the end, it came down to the final two matches in the fifth and sixth singles positions.  Mike Furr (at left) was tied with Samuel Lemberger, 6-3, 2-6 and was down, 3-6 in the third set breaker before coming back to win his first singles match of the season at 8-6. 

Norfolk State took four other singles victories to pick up the team win.

For Delaware, Adam Lawton saw his fourth straight win to move to 22-5 on the year with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Igor Braga in the No. 2 spot.

In doubles play, Lawton and Troy Beneck defeated Braga and Robin Riethmueller, 8-4 while Furr and Jason Derene also picked up an 8-4 victory to clinch the team point.

The Blue Hen men return to the courts Saturday with a Colonial Athletic Association competition at William & Mary.
