Delaware Sophomore Libero Ariel Shonk Earns Second Consecutive CAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week Honor

RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware sophomore libero Ariel Shonk earned Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after leading the Blue Hens to the Delaware Invitational championship over the weekend.

A native of Atlanta, Ga. (Riverwood International Charter), Shonk was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after helping Delaware post victories over Rutgers, Sacred Heart and Furman in its home-opening matches.

Shonk led the Blue Hens in digs during all four of Delaware’s matches last week, posting at least 33 digs in three of the contests. She opened the week with 33 digs at Penn on Tuesday, and followed with 36 digs during Friday’s five-set victory over Rutgers.

After recording 12 digs in the 3-0 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon, Shonk made a season-high 37 digs during another five-set triumph over Furman that night in the championship match.

Shonk averaged 6.56 digs per set during UD’s four matches, and she currently ranks second in the CAA and tied for 12th in Division I with a 5.47 digs average this season.

Shonk and the Blue Hens, who are 6-4 on the year, travel to Villanova on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before playing three matches at the Clemson Classic this weekend.
