NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team played yet another five-set match on Saturday night, but the Blue Hens dropped the deciding set as William & Mary posted a 3-2 victory over UD at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Tribe, which won its second consecutive match while improving to 9-17 overall and 4-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association, won by set scores of 13-25, 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 15-5. Delaware dropped its third straight contest, falling to 11-12 overall and 3-6 in league play.

Mallory Brickerd paced William & Mary with 15 kills and a .286 hitting percentage while Liz Brown added 14 kills for the Tribe, which snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Blue Hens. Gabrielle Pe and Stephanie Paul each handed out 19 assists, while Celine Alasomuka made a team-high 28 digs for William & Mary.

Delaware sophomore Katie Hillman recorded 18 kills and hit .255 to pace the Blue Hen attack, as she went over the 300-kills mark for the season. Liz Brock contributed nine kills for Delaware, while Chandler Bryant added eight and Jill Myers chipped in with seven.

Kali Funk set her season-high in assists for the third consecutive match by handing out 40 on the night, and also made a season-best 15 digs. Ariel Shonk led all players with 31 digs during the match and went over 500 for the season, while Autumn Jenkins added 15 digs and Hillman contributed 14.

Delaware exploded out of the gate, taking an early 11-3 lead and cruising to a 12-point win during the opening set. However the Tribe captured the second set to even the match, and after the third game was knotted at 23-23, William & Mary won the next two points to take a two sets to one lead.

The Tribe continued its momentum to take a 9-2 edge during the fourth set, before the Blue Hens roared back with 10 consecutive points to go ahead. Delaware remained in front the remainder of the frame, and eventually put the set away with Hillman’s eighth kill of the game. But William & Mary used a four-point run to take a 7-3 lead in the fifth set, and the Blue Hens could not recover.

“We started well and fought back in the fourth set, but we didn’t take care of the ball well enough to earn the victory,” said Delaware head coach Bonnie Kenny. “The bottom line is that we have got to be able to serve and pass, and we didn’t do that tonight.”

• Funk also had six kills and no attack errors during the match
