University of Delaware Volleyball Team Wraps Up Road Schedule With 3-0 Loss at UNCW
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- The UNCW volleyball team put three players in double digits kills and hit .301 for the match as the Seahawks recorded a 3-0 win over the University of Delaware Sunday afternoon at Hanover Hall.
UNCW, which improved to 16-8 overall and 5-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association, posted the victory by set scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 25-22. The Blue Hens, which fell to 11-14 overall and 3-8 in league play, dropped their fifth consecutive match. With the win, the Seahawks snapped a 16-match losing streak to Delaware and defeated the Blue Hens for the first time since the 2003 season.
Sophomore Jill Meyers paced the Delaware offensive effort with 10 kills against just one attack error as she hit .643 for the match. Chandler Bryant also had 10 kills on the afternoon to finish with a .421 attack percentage, while Katie Hillman finished the match with nine kills.
Kali Funk handed out 31 assists for the Blue Hens, while Ariel Shonk led the way defensively with 12 digs.
Morgan Kline led UNCW with 13 kills and a .423 attack percentage, while Christi Laite also had 13 kills for the Seahawks. Nicole Lott chipped in with 12 kills, while Alyssa Desjardins and Victoria Phillips combined for 48 assists. Haley Collins made a team-high 15 digs for UNCW, while Cline added 13 as she posted a double-double.
The Seahawks jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first set and did not trail from there, going up by as many as nine points before clinching the set on a kill by Kline. The Blue Hens were down four points early in the second game, but battled back to knot the set at 12-12. The teams were again tied at 18-18 and Delaware was still down just a point at 23-22, but UNCW posted a block on Lauren Talley and received a kill by Laite to put the set away.
Delaware trailed during the early stages of the third frame, but the Blue Hens used a 9-4 run to take a 17-15 advantage following a kill by Bryant. However the Seahawks immediately responded by taking six of the next seven points, and eventually ended the match by blocking an attack by Bryant.
“You can’t do ONE thing well and win a match,” said Blue Hen head coach Bonnie Kenny. “The only thing we had success doing is running the slide out on the pin, other than that our offense was non-existent. We have got to get tougher and better fast because we are running out of time.”
