NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware volleyball head coach Bonnie Kenny has announced the signing of six high school standouts who have signed National Letters of Intent with UD and will begin playing for the Blue Hens during the 2013 season.

Megan Blunden, Kali Funk, Taylor Hollingsworth, Autumn Jenkins, Erin Layne and Lauren Talley will enroll at Delaware in the fall and comprise the Blue Hens’ Class of 2017.

Blunden (above right), a 6-1 outside hitter from Chapel Hill, N.C., was named All-Conference during her final three seasons at Chapel Hill High School. She led her Triangle Volleyball Club team to a 12th place finish at the 2012 USAV Nationals, Athlete photoand was a PrepVolleyball.com honorable mention pick in both 2010 and 2011.

Funk (above left), a 5-9 setter from Orlando, Fla., led The First Academy to four consecutive state championships while being named the team’s MVP as a senior. A two-year captain, Funk was selected first team All-Conference during her final two seasons. She was named MVP of the 2012 USAV American National Championships while leading her Top Select squad to the title, and was a member of the 2011 Florida High Performance National Team. An outstanding student as well, Funk is a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Honor Society and National Art Honor Society.

Athlete photoHollingsworth (at right), a 5-5 defensive specialist/libero from nearby Wilmington, Del., was a first team All-State selection in 2012 at Ursuline Academy. She led the Raiders to the 2009 state title, and to runner up finishes in both 2010 and 2012. Also a four-year member of the Ursuline track team, Hollingsworth was a three-year Jefferson Awards Student Leader and volunteered at the A.I. duPont Children’s Hospital.

Athlete photoJenkins (middle left), a 6-0 outside hitter from Damascus, Md., was named the team’s Most Valuable Player in 2010 and 2012 at Damascus High School. A team captain during her final two seasons, Jenkins led Damascus to the state tournament quarterfinals in both 2011 and 2012.

Layne (below right), a 5-11 setter from Flower Mound, Tex., was a first team All-District selection as a senior after earning second team honors during her junior season. Layne, who served as team captain during her senior year at Flower Mound Athlete photoHigh School, led her TAV club team to a second place finish at the USAV American Nationals. An excellent student, Layne is a member of the National Honor Society, is a National Merit Commended Scholar, and is an AP National Scholar.

Talley (below left), a 5-10 outside hitter from Wilmington, Del., was a three-year first team All-State selection who led St. Mark’s High School to the 2011 and 2012 state championship. A three-time first team All-Conference pick as well, Talley served as the Spartans team captain during each of her final two seasons. She also was a PrepVolleyball.com Sophomore 79 selection.

Athlete photo“This year’s class is extremely large,” said Kenny, who will be entering her 12th season in Newark this fall. “They will provide depth in many positions, and a few will have to step up immediately and contribute. I hope they come to UD in shape, strong and ready to compete.”

Kenny has led the Blue Hens to four Colonial Athletic Association Championships in the last six years, and Delaware has finished among the top three in the regular season during each year as well. Last year UD finished 16-14 overall and was second in the CAA with a 9-3 mark, before falling in a five-set match during the conference tournament final. Delaware will open its 2013 season on August 30-31 when the Blue Hens compete at the Pepperdine Tournament in Malibu, Calif.
