WILMINGTON, Del. -- Members of the University of Delaware volleyball team brightened the day of local children last Saturday when the Blue Hens decorated t-shirts with patients at the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware.

“Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald house was a great time for the kids and myself,” said Blue Hen freshman Autumn Jenkins. “The ones that I got to meet were so joyful and happy that people were there to just hang out and play with them. They were so full of life and appreciative of everything. It made me really appreciate the little things. I realized that something as simple as making t-shirts meant a lot more to them than I thought. This experience was a huge eye opener, and made me take a step back and really look at my life and how blessed I am to have the opportunities that I have been given.”

“It was such a humbling experience and really put things into perspective,” fellow freshman Kali Funk commented. “It makes you realize what’s important in life and it shows you how fortunate you truly are. It was such a blessing to help the children. To us it was a simple act, but to them it meant the world. I felt so privileged to be a part of something like that. It meant so much to us to just see a little smile on their faces. It was an experience I will never forget!”

“The Ronald McDonald House was such a great experience,” remarked UD sophomore Ariel Shonk. “We got to decorate white shirts with the kids, and they all loved it. We painted flowers, stars, names, and sports on the shirts. One of the girls was having so much fun she made eight shirts herself! It was awesome that we were able to have such a positive influence on their day.”

The Ronald McDonald House of Delaware provides a safe, affordable “home away from home” to families of seriously or chronically ill or injured children who are being treated at area hospitals and operates three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms within pediatric units of hospitals across Delaware.
