The field of 64 for the 2011 NCAA Division I women’s volleyball tournament will be announced on Sunday, November 27, and the Blue Hens will discover where they are off to next. The selection show can be seen live on ESPNU starting at 6 p.m.
Delaware (20-12) earned the Colonial Athletic Association’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament after defeating Virginia Commonwealth in the CAA Tournament Championship last weekend.
The Blue Hens earned the top seed in the CAA Tournament by posting an 11-3 conference record, tying Northeastern for first place. The Blue Hens swept the Huskies in the regular season, earning the right to host the six-team field.
Vying for back-to-back tournament championships, the Blue Hens battled back from a two-set deficit, and a 17-13 hole in the third game to defeat fifth-seeded James Madison in the semifinals and came back for a 2-1 gap to take down upstart sixth-seeded VCU in the championship match.
The win was the fourth tournament championship in the last five seasons for head coach Bonnie Kenny and the Blue Hens.
Last season, the Blue Hens were shipped to State College, Pa. for the four-team first and second round pod hosted by Penn State. Delaware dropped a straight set 3-0 decision to Virginia Tech in the first round.
Delaware put in a bid to host the first and second rounds this season. The tournament will begin with first round games on Thursday, Dec. 1 and Friday, Dec. 2.
