Tony Lucas, a former Columbia University standout who previously spent two seasons on the football staff at Georgetown University, was hired as running backs coach at the University of Delaware in February, 2013.  He will begin his fourth season on the staff during the 2016 campaign.

During his first season on the Delaware staff with head coach Dave Brock in 2013, Lucas guided a UD running attack that ranked No. 4 in the Colonial Athletic Association in rushing (177.0 yards per game) and was No. 2 in scoring offense (32.8 points per game). All-American running back Andrew Pierce capped an outstanding career by leading the team in rushing for the fourth straight year and earning All-CAA honors for the fourth time.

In 2014, Delaware ranked No. 5 in the CAA in rushing average (161.6) and No. 6 in total offense (353.2) thanks in large part to the backfield due of Wes Hills (952 yards) and Jalen Randolph (629) who combined for 15 touchdowns on the ground.

During the 2015 season, Delaware's running game flourished despite season-ending injuries to Hills in Week 1 and to Randolph in Week 3. Thanks to the emergence of sophomore Kareem Williams and redshirt freshman Thomas Jefferson - the CAA Offensive Player of the Year - Delaware ranked No. 2 in the CAA and 17th in the NCAA in rushing offense (219.4 yards per game).

Lucas, a native of Bloomfield, Conn., was a standout defensive back at Columbia University and earned the team’s Maniatty-Remmer Unsung Hero Award. He earned his degree in economics in 2003 and later earned a master’s degree in economics at Trinity in 2010. He is currently pursuing a second master’s degree in education from Bowling Green.

“Tony is a great addition to our staff,” said Brock in announcing the hiring. “He came highly-recommended from several people that I have worked with. I’m excited for him to inherit one of the most talented positions on this team.”

Lucas began his college coaching career at NCAA III Trinity College in Hartford, Conn. as a graduate assistant and outside linebackers and served for two years during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. He then moved on to Bowling Green State where he was the staff’s defensive quality control coach and assistant academic coordinator.

He arrived at Georgetown in 2011 and spent two seasons there as the Hoya’s running backs coach with head coach Kevin Kelly. Georgetown went 8-3 and rushed for an average of 147.5 yards per game in 2011 to rank second in the Patriot League. In 2012, the Hoyas ranked No. 3 in the Patriot League in rushing yardage with an average of 146.1 yards per game.

“I consider it a privilege to join a program with such a rich tradition as the University of Delaware,” said Lucas, who resides in Elkton, Md. “I am excited for the opportunity to add to the legacy of Delaware football.”

The Delaware football family was saddened with the passing of Tony's wife, Sarita Wright, who died suddenly on Sept. 21, 2014. The couple had been married for two years. Sarita was serving as deputy attorney general in the Delaware Attorney General’s Office and was one of the rising young stars in the Delaware legal community.
