Delaware Baseball Announces 2014 Slate
NEWARK, Del. –- University of Delaware baseball team, under the direction of 14-year head coach Jim Sherman, announced its 2014 schedule Thursday, a 53-game slate that includes road swings through six different states.
In 2013, the Blue Hens produced a 33-22 record with a 15-12 mark in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play and made their third appearance CAA Tournament appearance in the past five years.
“We are excited about our 2014 schedule,” said head coach Jim Sherman. “We open up down at the Citadel tournament and play a challenging weekend opener with Citadel, West Virginia and Louisville, who played in last year World Series. We have four straight non-conference weekends at home before we start conference play and we are very excited about the opening of our new Bob Hannah Stadium set for Feb. 28.”
To open the 2014 season, Delaware will travel to Charleston, S.C. to participate in the Homewood Suites Tournament hosted by The Citadel. The Hens will face The Citadel, West Virginia and Louisville from Feb. 14-16. The Blue Hens will travel south again the following weekend to play in the Campbell University Tournament in Buies Creek, N.C. Delaware will play four games in three days at Campbell facing the host Camels and Manhattan.
The Hens open their home schedule at the newly renovated Bob Hannah Stadium, which includes 31 home dates, on the weekend of February 28 against Fordham for a three-game stand. In non-conference action, Delaware welcomes Delaware State, Rider, La Salle, Fairfield, Maryland, Wilmington University, Bryant, Temple and Saint Joseph’s to Bob Hannah Stadium in 2014.
The CAA schedule begins with a three-game series at the Tribe of William & Mary from March 28-30. Delaware will then host CAA member Northeastern the first weekend of April. The following weekend, April 11-13, the Blue Hens travel to South Carolina for a three-game stand at the College of Charleston. From April 18-20, Delaware will play at Hofstra before hosting UNCW the last weekend of April. The Blue Hens play their last CAA road series at Towson on May 9-11, then will close out the CAA regular season by welcoming James Madison to Newark May 15-17.
Delaware will also take part in the annual Liberty Bell Classic Tournament, which features the area’s Division I baseball programs. The Blue Hens will host Temple in the first round of the Tournament on March 25. If Delaware wins, it will advance to the second round on April 1.
The 2014 CAA Tournament will be hosted by UNCW at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C. The double-elimination tournament is set for May 21-24 and will feature the top six CAA teams who will compete for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
