NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware baseball team was honored by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the Colonial Athletic Association as Blue Hens senior right-fielder Nick Ferdinand (at right) was named National Co-Player of the Week and CAA Player of the Week for his performance last week.

Ferdinand, a senior outfielder from Bensalem, Pa. (Archbishop Ryan HIgh High School ), batted .417 (5-for-12) with four home runs, a double, five runs scored and seven RBI’s as Delaware won two of three over James Madison last weekend.  He went 3-for-5 with three homers and five RBI’s in a 12-4 win on Friday and was 2-for-4 with a double, homer, two RBI’s and two runs scored in Thursday’s 8-7 win.

The senior captain became the first Delaware baseball player to earn Louisville Slugger National Co-Player of the Week selection by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper since April 16, 2007, when Bryan Hagerich was honored by the publication.  Ferdinand joins Tennessee Tech’s right-handed pitcher David Hess and N.C. State’s left-handed pitcher Carlos Rondon for this week’s honor.

Ferdinand becomes the fourth member of the Blue Hens to earn a CAA weekly honor and was the second Delaware offensive player to earn CAA Co-Player of the Week honors along with Jimmy Yezzo on weekly honors on Mar. 25.  UD starting pitchers Chad Kuhl and Matt Soren have also been named CAA Pitcher of the Week three times this season.

Joining Ferdinand as Co-Player of the Week is Towson’s Kurt Wertz while William & Mary’s left-handed starter Jason Inghram was named Pitcher of the Week and William & Mary’s freshman catcher Ryan Hissey was tabbed Rookie of the Week.

The Blue Hens roll into post-season action with the CAA Baseball Championships set to begin on Wednesday, May 22, in Harrisonburg, Va., at James Madison’s Veteran’s Memorial Park. The No. 3 seed Blue Hens square off against the No. 6 seed James Madison in an opening round contest at 3:30 p.m.
