BUIES, CREEK, N.C. --  The University of Delaware baseball squad took advantage of an eighth inning balk to defeat Manhattan, 4-3, before using a big first inning to post a 6-2 victory over Campbell as the Blue Hens closed out play with a sweep at the Campbell Invitational Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.

The Blue Hens, who snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-4 on the season, got outstanding pitching performances in both games as Brandon Hinkle went eight innings to pick up the win over Manhattan, and Chad Martin was outstanding in earning the win in his first career start against Campbell, allowing just one hit in seven innings. Luke Alicknavitch earned the save in both victories, going three combined scoreless innings.

"We got a great outing on the mound today from Hinkle in game one,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “And we got an outstanding pitching performance from Chad Martin in his first college start against Campbell. I was so proud of him in how he attacked the hitters. Today was just big-time after our poor showing Saturday. Getting that four-spot in the first inning highlighted by Jake Clark's double really got us going against Campbell. We are very proud of our kids."

In the first game, the Blue Hens broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning when pinch-runner Tyler Dean scored on a balk by Manhattan’s Mike Vocatura. Greg Olenski led off the inning with a pinch-hit single, with Dean taking his spot on the base paths. Dean then moved to second on a sacrifice by Ty Warrington and on to third after a wild pitch.

Delaware got a great effort on the mound from starter Hinkle and reliever Alicknavitch. Hinkle (1-1) went eight innings and allowed just three runs on eight hits while striking out five. Alicknavitch pitched a scoreless ninth inning for the save.

The Hens jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-run third inning thanks to run-scoring singles from EJ Stoltzfus and Norm Donkin. Stoltzfus scored the third run on a passed ball. The Jaspers (1-3) tied the game at 3-3 with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by an RBI single by Andrew Gorecki and two passed balls that resulted in runs.

In the nightcap, Delaware took control early against the host Camels (6-2) by pushing across four runs in the top of the first inning. Donkin put the Hens on the board with an RBI single, while one out later Jake Clark ripped a two-run double to left field. Following a single by Zach Lopes, Tyler Powell legged out an infield single to chase home Clark and make it a 4-0 game.

Donkin increased the lead to five in the top of the second when he belted a solo homer to left, before Campbell got two runs back in the bottom of the third off Martin.

The Blue Hens scored the final run of the contest in the top of the fifth when Donkin led off with a single, moved to third on a single by Clark, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Lopes.

Martin and Alicknavitch would make the lead stand up, combining to allow just two Camels hits during the game. Martin improved to 1-0 after surrendering two earned runs on one hit in seven innings of work, while Alicknavitch earned his second save of the day after striking out three batters in two innings of scoreless relief.

Donkin finished 4 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBI to pace the 11-hit Delaware attack vs. Campbell while Clark, Lopes, and Powell added two hits apiece.

Delaware begins its home schedule this weekend with a three-game series against Fordham, including the opener on Friday.
