2013-14 UD Men's Basketball Non-Conference Schedule

Athlete photoNEWARK, Del. -- Trips to Atlantic Coast, Big Ten and Big East Conference opponents, as well as four home games, highlight the 2013-14 University of Delaware men’s basketball non-conference schedule announced Wednesday.

The 15-game slate will be another challenging one for the Blue Hens, who will play 10 contests against teams that participated in 2013 national postseason tournaments.

The Blue Hens will open their season on Friday, Nov. 8 with a road game at Richmond, which advanced to the College Basketball Invitational quarterfinals this past spring. Two days later Delaware will play its home opener when UD hosts Charleston Southern on Sunday, Nov. 10 in the first of two meetings between the Blue Hens and Buccaneers this year. Charleston Southern earned a bid to the 2013 Postseason NIT after falling in the Big South Tournament final in March.

Delaware will then take a week off before heading to Hampton on Sunday, Nov. 17 in a return game from the teams’ 2012 BracketBusters contest in Newark, and two days later will head north to face Army on Tuesday, Nov. 19. That game will mark the Blue Hens’ first contest against the Black Knights since December, 1987.

For the fifth consecutive year Delaware will travel to Villanova as the Blue Hens will take on the Wildcats, a 2013 NCAA Tournament participant, on Friday, Nov. 22. The Blue Hens will then conclude their four-game road stretch by renewing the Route 1 Rivalry at Delaware State on Monday, Nov. 25.

Delaware returns home on Saturday, Nov. 30 to host Robert Morris at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Colonials won the Northeast Conference regular season crown a year ago, and advanced to the second round of the Postseason NIT after a dramatic home victory over Kentucky. The Blue Hens then kick off a stretch of six consecutive games away from Newark, beginning with a road contest at Charleston Southern on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Next up is a trip to South Bend, Ind., where the Blue Hens will face Notre Dame and former UD head coach Mike Brey in the Gotham Classic on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Fighting Irish advanced to the Big East Tournament semifinals in March and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament as well.

Following a nine-day layoff for final exams, Delaware will travel to Fargo, N.D. to take on North Dakota State in its second Gotham Classic game on Monday, Dec. 16, before heading to Big Ten power Ohio State two days later. The Buckeyes advanced to the 2013 Elite Eight and finished last season ranked No. 6 in the final USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.

The Blue Hens conclude their Gotham Classic schedule on Saturday, Dec. 21 with a contest against Bryant at Madison Square Garden, the second straight year Delaware will play in the World’s Most Famous Arena. Bryant finished 19-12 a year ago, placing second in the Northeast Conference and earning a berth in the 2013 College Basketball Invitational.

Following a holiday break Delaware will play its final non-conference road game on Monday, Dec. 30 with a contest at Atlantic 10 opponent Saint Bonaventure. The Blue Hens will then host Liberty on Jan. 1, which will be Delaware’s first ever game held on New Year’s Day. The Flames made an unexpected run to the Big South Tournament Championship this March, winning the league crown to earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

The Blue Hens wrap up their non-conference slate on Saturday, Jan. 4 with a home game against Cal Poly, which competed in the Tournament this spring.

Delaware will play 16 Colonial Athletic Association games this year, facing the other eight conference schools home and away, with the full schedule expected to be announced in the fall.
