WILMINGTON, Del. – Members of the University of Delaware women’s basketball team will be honored before the 2012 Wilmington Blue Rocks' home opener against the Frederick Keys on Friday, April 13 at 7:05 p.m.
As part of the pregame celebrations, the team has been invited to simultaneously throw out ceremonial first pitches to members of the Blue Rocks.
The Blue Hens will share pregame honors with U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, who will also toss ceremonial first pitches.
Delaware (31-2) recently completed a record-breaking season that included its first NCAA Tournament victory, an undefeated conference run, and a first-ever Colonial Athletic Association title.
This memorable season began for the Hens after stunning then No. 11 Penn State in an 80-71 upset at the Bob Carpenter Center in just the second game of the season as Delaware defeated their highest ranked opponent in school history.
Delaware’s success earned the team national recognition as the Blue Hens cracked the national polls for the first time.
The Hens, who finished out the regular season with a No. 7 ranking in the Associated Press Top 25 poll, also established a perfect 14-0 run on their home court and set school records for wins in a season (31) and consecutive wins (21).
Friday’s pregame events will mark the second time in five days that a member of the Delaware women’s basketball team has thrown out the ceremonial first pitch in a professional baseball game. All-American Elena Delle Donne, who led the nation in scoring throughout the duration of the 2011-12 season, bestowed the honor of tossing the ceremonial first pitch during the Philadelphia Phillies home opener on Monday, April 9.
Broadcast coverage for the game begins at 6:35 p.m. as studio host Rob Cunningham brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
