ST. LOUIS – University of Delaware standout Elena Delle Donne, who recently completed a memorable season for the Blue Hen women's basketball squad as the nation's leading scorer, was honored again on Wednesday as one of 10 players named to the 2011-12 U.S. Basketball Writers Association Women's All-America Team.
The All-American award was the second of the post-season for Delle Donne, who was named to the Associated Press 1st Team All-American squad on Tuesday.
Delle Donne, the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year, was honored by the USBWA earlier this season when earned USBWA National Player of the Week accolades on Jan. 10.
Delle Donne helped Delaware (31-2) to a historical season that included its first-ever national Top 25 ranking, a perfect 18-0 Colonial Athletic Association regular season, and the Blue Hens’ first CAA Tournament crown. She polished off the season with a 39-point performance that boosted Delaware to its first NCAA Tournament victory with a 73-42 win over host UALR in the first round. The Hens were knocked out in the second round by Kansas.
The 2011-12 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, Delle Donne leads all NCAA Division I players in scoring, averaging 28.1 points. The 6-foot-5 junior finished out the 2011-12 season with 925 points, becoming only the 15th player in NCAA Division I history to reach the 900 points per season milestone. Her 925 points this season ranks seventh in the all-time NCAA Division I record book.
Seven conferences were represented among the ten USBWA All-America Team selections. Delle Donne is joined by Skylar Diggins (Notre Dame), Chelsea Gray (Duke), Brittney Griner (Baylor), Shenise Johnson (Miami), A’dia Mathies (Kentucky), Nnemkadi Ogwumike (Stanford), Samantha Prahalis (Ohio State), Odyssey Sims (Baylor), and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland).
