NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware junior Elena Delle Donne was one of seven players selected to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region 2 Team announced by the WBCA earlier this month.
Delle Donne was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year after helping Delaware (31-2) to a historical season that included its first-ever national ranking, a perfect 18-0 Colonial Athletic Association regular season, and its first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a 73-42 win over UALR.
The 2011-12 Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, Delle Donne currently leads all NCAA Division I players in scoring, averaging 28.1 points. Delle Donne finished out the 2011-12 season with 925 points, becoming only the 15th player in NCAA Division I history to reach the 900 points per season milestone. Her 925 points this season ranks seventh in the all-time NCAA Division I record book.
Delle Donne is the first Delaware player to be named to the All-Region team since Tyresa Smith earned that recognition in 2007 after leading the Colonial Athletic Association in scoring and ranking 18th in Division I by averaging 19.7 points per game.
In selecting contenders for the All-America team, the selection committee uses an equation to determine a fair number of nominees from each region. The number of Division I institutions in each region is divided by the number of Division I institutions overall to get a percentage for each region. This percentage is then multiplied by 52 (the total number of desired finalists) to get the number of finalists for each region.
The 52 All-Region Team members then go before the selection committee, which reduces the list to 40 finalists. These 40 finalists can come from any region. However, per a motion passed by the WBCA Board of Directors in 2008, the selection committee must select 12 finalists from Region 1 and six finalists from Region 4.
The 2012 WBCA Division I Coaches' All-America Team will be announced at 1:05 p.m. MT Saturday March 31, during the NCAA's Super Saturday festivities at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
Delle Donne was joined on the All-Region 2 team by Chay Shegog of North Carolina, Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams of Miami, Alyssa Thomas of Maryland, and Chelsea Gray and Elizabeth Williams of Duke.
