University of Delaware Spirit Teams Post Impressive Finishes at UCA Championships; Cheerleaders Win National Title
The University of Delaware Co-Ed Cheerleading squad captured first place in the Division I competition as the Blue Hens snapped a seven-year streak of second place finishes and overtook 12-time defending champion and rival Morehead State University (2002-13) for the title. The event was held Jan. 17-19.
“I am extremely proud and excited about what this team has accomplished,” said UD cheerleading head coach Ben Schreiber. “We are so excited to finally take the next step and win the national championship. In my seven years as an athlete and coach here at Delaware, we have finished in second place seven consecutive years and it feels amazing to finally win it all. We went through so much adversity this year but the team never gave up. During our nationals season in December and January the team truly became a family and set the tone for future teams.”
Delaware, which features just two seniors on its roster, posted a score of 89.1 points (out of 100) by the judging panel to win by four points. The title was the second in school history for the Blue Hens and first since the 2001 squad won it all.
In addition to the first place finish by the cheerleading squad, the University of Delaware was also well-represented in two other categories with YoUDee placing second in the Open Mascot Division behind Tennessee Tech and the UD Dance Team finishing fifth in the Hip Hop Division (just 1.5 points behind the winner) and sixth in the Jazz Division.
