NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware volleyball head coach Bonnie Kenny has announced the addition of Ryan Newell to the Blue Hen staff as an assistant coach.

Newell comes to Newark after spending one season at the University of Pittsburgh as Director of Volleyball Operations. Newell helped lead the Panthers to a 19-14 overall record in 2013, including an 11-9 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

“I am really excited about adding Ryan to our staff,” said Kenny, who begins her 13th season leading the Blue Hens this fall. “He has a great work ethic and is passionate about volleyball. Ryan has the ability to take the area of technology to the next level in our program. He is a great player that will be an asset in the gym. His attention to detail when training players will be embraced by our student athletes. We are fortunate to have him on our staff.”

Prior to his year at Pitt, Newell served as an assistant coach at Seattle University. A 2008 graduate of Chico State University, Newell also spent three seasons at the University of California, San Diego in 2010-12.

Additionally Newell was a volunteer assistant coach for the University of California in 2009-10, helping lead the Golden Bears to a 21-11 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Newell played club volleyball at Chico State from 2003-08, and was club president and team captain during his final three years. He also served as an assistant coach with the Chico State women’s volleyball team  from 2005-08, helping the Wildcats to a 71-43 record during that time.
