NEWARK, Del. – University of Delaware women’s lacrosse head coach Kateri Linville announced Friday the hiring of Sarah Gallion and former Blue Hens standout Corrine Drost as assistant coaches.

Drost (below left) returns to her alma mater after she served two seasons in the same role at Lafayette College. Previously, she spent the 2012 season as a volunteer assistant coach with Linville and the Blue Hens. Gallion (below right) joins UD from a successful Jacksonville program where she was the assistant coach and defensive coordinator for three years.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to be back at Delaware,” remarked Drost. “I am proud to see Delaware winning and competing in postseason play and honored that Kateri has brought me back on staff to help her take the program to the next level. I believe that Delaware has the potential to compete for championships and break into the national rankings. I look forward to working with Kateri, Sarah, and our student-athletes to achieve those goals.”

In her two years at Lafayette, Drost recruited and coached academically driven student-athletes in the Mid-Atlantic region. She made an immediate impact on the program as she helped guide the Leopards to a Patriot League Tournament appearance in 2013, concluding one of the program’s best seasons in recent history.

A four-time letterwinner and three-year starter for the Blue Hens from 2008 to 2011, Drost was a team captain her senior season. Over the course of her career, Drost improved her season goal total each year, including posting a career-best 30 in 2011 to finish with 70 for her tenure. Playing both the midfield and attack positions, Drost snagged 52 draw controls as well as collecting 44 groundballs. During her career, Delaware made back-to-back appearances in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, finishing as the league’s runner-up in 2009.

Drost earned the team’s Janet Smith “Grit Award,” named for the long-time Blue Hens head coach who led Delaware from 1980-89 and collected three national championships.

A native of Parkton, Md., Drost was a two-sport standout at Hereford High School in Baltimore County. She graduated in May 2011 from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts degree in human services.

“Corrine is a hard worker and true competitor,” commented Linville, who recently wrapped up her fourth season as the head coach of her alma mater. “As a former Blue Hen, Corrine understands the Delaware way. She believes in developing fitness, fundamentals, and team play. She will work diligently to help our student-athletes and team take their game day performance to the next level."

Linville continued, “During her tenure at Lafayette, Corrine has had the opportunity to hone her philosophy and leadership skills. She knows how to prepare, compete and lead a team to post-season play. I am confident that she will instill those values in our current student-athletes and help us build momentum in our transition offense and settled attack. Above all else, Corrine values her Delaware experience and is eager to share her passion for Blue Hens lacrosse with our student-athletes, recruits, families, alumni, and fans.”

Gallion, a 2008 graduate of Johns Hopkins University, brings five years of coaching experience to the Hens. During her three years at JU, she helped transform the Dolphins from a startup program into a national contender with three conference championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. This past season, Jacksonville ranked in the top 10 nationally in six of eight NCAA statistical categories.

“I am excited to be a part of all the great things that are happening at Delaware right now,” stated Gallion. “Kateri has established a vision that is fiercely competitive. She has demonstrated a positive trend in developing individual players and building team success. I look forward to helping to lead a great group of student-athletes to academic and athletic excellence. It is truly an honor to join the Delaware lacrosse coaching staff and to become a part of the Blue Hen family.”

Prior to Jacksonville, Gallion coached prep powerhouse Bartram Trail, helping the squad remain one of the top programs in north Florida with consecutive district championships and a cumulative record of 42-13. She also has coaching experience with LaxManiax Elite club, North East Maryland Select (NEMS) club, and Johns Hopkins Little Jays youth league team.

A former captain and four-year varsity starter at Johns Hopkins, Gallion was twice named the school’s defensive player of the year. She also earned All-American Lacrosse Conference and All-Mid-Atlantic honors in 2006 and 2008. As a senior, she was honored as a WomensLacrosse.com third team All-American. Gallion played in the prestigious IWLCA North-South Senior All-Star game as a defender, leading her South team to a win to cap a stellar career.

Gallion starred for Maryland’s C. Milton Wright High School from 2001-04. She graduated from Hopkins with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and minor in entrepreneurship management.

“Sarah has a tremendous work ethic and passion for the game, which has helped her become a top assistant in a championship program,” Linville said. “Her leadership and decision-making skills will make an immediate impact in our team’s ability to execute in pressure situations and her enthusiasm and networking will be an asset to our recruiting efforts."

Linville continued, “Delaware takes tremendous pride in our defensive play and so does Sarah. She was a top defender at Hopkins and a proven defensive leader at Jacksonville. I am confident that our current players will enjoy learning from her expertise and that Sarah will enjoy having the opportunity to lead our defensive unit.”

Drost and Gallion replace Kristin Hopson and Kristen Carr, who both left the program to pursue other career opportunities.
