Rachel Chupein, a former standout player at Blue Hen rival James Madison who spent the previous five seasons on the Dukes staff, was named an assistant for the University of Delaware women’s soccer coaching staff on March 4, 2014.

Chupein (pronounced “shoe pin”), a native of nearby West Chester, Pa., completed her third year on the staff in 2016.

Since her arrival, the Blue Hens have advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament and team members have earned two all-region and 10 All-CAA citations.

A 2009 graduate of James Madison, Chupein joined the Dukes’ coaching staff that fall and went on to lead the team to a five-year record of 58-36-8 that included three 10-win seasons, a 2010 CAA title and NCAA Tournament berth, a CAA regular season championship in 2013, and three trips to the CAA Tournament title game for head coach David Lombardo.

She has also been active in coaching at numerous camps and clinics for youths of all ages and holds an NSCAA national coaching diploma.

Chupein earned her degree in business administration with a concentration in business to business marketing in 2009 from JMU and went on to earn her master’s degree in sports administration from Liberty University in 2012.

As a JMU player, Chupein was a team captain for the Dukes as a junior and senior, when the Dukes received at-large NCAA Tournament berths (2007, 2008).  JMU advanced to the NCAA round of 16 in 2008 and the round of 32 in 2007.

During her playing career the Dukes compiled an overall record of 54-28-6. That mark included a 17-5-1 record in 2007, when the team set school season records for wins, winning percentage (.761), fewest losses, regular-season wins (15), and home wins (12) as well as the record for consecutive games without a loss (9).

Chupein, a two-year starter on defense, was named to the CAA All-Tournament team in 2008. She was voted the team's co-defensive Most Valuable Player and was the recipient of the team's Strength and Conditioning award in 2008. She was a four-time winner of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Award and twice was named a JMU Athletic Director Scholar Athlete.

Following her collegiate career, Chupein also played three professional seasons as a member of the Philadelphia Pirates and the Philadelphia Liberty in the Women’s Professional Soccer League in 2006-08.

She is a graduate of West Chester East High School where she earned All-State and Chesmont League and District Player of the Year honors as a senior.
