“I am really excited about adding Ryan to our staff,” said UD head coach Bonnie Kenny while announcing Newell's hiring. “He has a great work ethic and is passionate about volleyball. Ryan has the ability to take the area of technology to the next level in our program. He is a great player that will be an asset in the gym. His attention to detail when training players will be embraced by our student athletes. We are fortunate to have him on our staff.”

Prior to his year at Pitt, Newell served as an assistant coach at Seattle University. A 2008 graduate of Chico State University, Newell also spent three seasons at the University of California, San Diego in 2010-12.
