University of Delaware Sophomore Guillermo Delgado Named to Hermann Trophy Watch List for Menís Soccer
KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- University of Delaware men’s soccer standout Guillermo Delgado earned yet another impressive preseason accolade Thursday when the sophomore forward was named one of 32 candidates on the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List.
College soccer’s most prestigious award, the Hermann Trophy is presented at the end of the season to the top male and female collegiate player in the country. The award, which will be presented on Jan. 9, 2015, is the equivalent of college football’s Heisman Trophy and has been presented each year since 1986.
“I am delighted for Guillermo and for the program,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy, who enter his ninth season this fall after leading the Blue Hens to NCAA Tournament appearances twice in the last three years. “He is our second Hermann finalist (Evan Frimpong was honored in 2011) and I hope, like Evans, Guillermo can follow Evans into the MLS Draft in the future. He has the mentality to continue to score goals and show the country that he and the University of Delaware soccer program deserve the national recognition they have attracted in recent years.”
Delaware, which earned votes in the preseason NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 poll announced Wednesday, returns eight starters from a team that went 14-5-1, advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association, and earned an NCAA Tournament at-large berth a year ago. The team captured the CAA title and won a first round NCAA Tournament game over Virginia in 2011.
Delgado enjoyed an outstanding 2013 rookie season in which he became the first freshman in team history to earn All-American honors. He tallied 35 points with 15 goals and 5 assists to help Delaware rank No. 2 in the nation in scoring offense, tallying 2.25 goals per game. He led all NCAA freshmen in goals scored and ranked No. 4 among all players in the nation.
A native of Tres Cantos, Spain (Jose Luis Sampedro High School), Delgado has quickly became one of nation’s elite college players. He started all 20 games for the Blue Hens in 2013 and fired 87 shots with 47 of them on goal. He was selected Freshman of the Year by College Sports Madness and was ranked as the No. 5 freshman in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. He also was named first team All-South Atlantic Region, second team ECAC All-East, first team All-Colonial Athletic Association, and CAA Rookie of the Year.
Delaware will begin preseason camp Aug. 14 and will plays its first scrimmage on Aug. 19 vs. Monmouth. The regular season opener is set for Aug. 29 vs. Sacred Heart at newly-named Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
