HEN SCRATCHINGS  🐔

• GETTING IT STARTED: The Blue Hens open the season Monday night versus Bryant University. The Blue Hens who won the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Championship were projected to finish fifth in the CAA this season. Delaware has appeared in five of the last six CAA Tournament title games, advancing to three NCAA Tournaments over that span.

• FIVE All-CAA SELECTIONS: Delaware placed five players on the 11-man Preseason All-CAA team, the conference announced earlier in the month. Junior midfielder Robert Gillin, redshirt junior goalie Todd Morton, senior captain Thibault Philippe, sophomore midfielder Fede Prieto and junior captain John Schroeder were all honored.

• REPLACING TWO DRAFTEES: The Blue Hens will need to replace a pair of Blue Hens legends this upcoming season, as Delaware lost both Guillermo Delgado and Thomas de Villardi to the MLS SuperDraft. Delgado, the 27th overall selection to the Chicago Fire, was a four-time All-American selection and was named the 2016 CAA Player of the Year. The Spanish born Delgado, closed his UD career as the all-time leader in goals (49) and the all-time leader in points (117). Villardi, a transfer from Duquesne University, started all 39 matches during his Delaware career. He finished his career tied for seventh all-time in assists despite appearing in just 39 games.

• MORTON MANNING THE NET: Junior goalie Todd Morton is back for the Blue Hens for his third eason in Newark. The UMBC transfer ranked first in the CAA with seven shutouts a season ago. Morton has compiled a goals allowed average of 1.02 during his two season with the Blue Hens. Morton’s next victory will be the 20th of his UD career.
