NEWARK, Del. – It was a tight battle all the way to the end, but the Blue Hens were unable to come out with the victory Sunday afternoon as Hampton picked up the 4-3 win over UD at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts.

The Pirates (1-0) collected the first doubles victory of the day, but the Hens (2-5) rallied to take the team doubles point.

Junior Asdrubal Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) and senior Roy Cheng (Shatin, Hong Kong/Sentinel Secondary School) paired for the 6-2 decision in No. 3 doubles.

Junior Colin Wong (Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning) and senior co-captain Tyler Flematti (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) followed in the top flight with a 7-6 victory.

Hampton opened singles action by taking the first two flights before freshman Luis Marcano (Kralendijk, Bonaire/Sagemont (Fla.)) captured his second straight win of the year by defeating Luke Thompson, 6-4, 6-2, in the sixth spot.

The Pirates then notched wins in No. 5 and No. 3 singles to clinch the team victory.

Flematti wrapped the day with the 6-7 (4), 6-3, 10-3 decision over Charles Hudson in No. 4 singles.

Head Coach Pablo Montana
“This was a good old-fashioned battle and it came down to the last match.  Even though we lost, we did a lot of positive things and we are continually improving.  We competed well on every court and we came up a little short, but we will take home some valuable lessons.”
