KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The University of Delaware baseball squad closed out the Sunshine State Classic with a 3-2 loss against Pitt on Sunday morning at Osceola County Stadium.

The Hens (0-4) received another strong outing from a starter as Kevin Milley went seven innings, allowing just five hits and one run.

“It’s a shame we wasted that start from Milley, and did not get a win," head coach Jim Sherman said.
"Kevin did a great job for seven innings, but we just didn’t have enough offense today to crack the win column. Our guys played extremely hard all weekend despite not having the results to show for it. We now as a coaching staff need to take the positives and build on them going into next weekend.”

The game was deadlocked at 1-1 until the eighth inning when the Panthers took the lead for good at 3-1. The Hens put up a run in the ninth but left three runners on base to end the game.

With the game dead-locked at one in the eighth, Delaware replaced Milley with James Meeker.

Meeker retired the first two Pittsburgh (3-1) batters before allowing a double to Jacob Wright. Meeker then hit Caleb Parry and allowed an infield hit to Frank Maldonado to load the bases. David Yanni then singled to give Pitt a 3-1 lead heading to the ninth.

In the games final frame the Blue Hens battled hard, loading the bases with two outs for sophomore Kyle Baker. Baker singled home first baseman Nick Patten, cutting the Pittsburgh lead to just 3-2.

With the tying run just 90 feet away, Pittsburgh brought in closer Yaya Chentouf to face UD catcher Nick Tierno.  Chentouf would get the better of Tierno in the end as the senior catcher lined out to second base to end the game.

Delaware will return to action next week when they participate in the Old Dominion Tournament in Norfolk, Va.

The Blue Hens open the weekend Friday against Old Dominion (4 p.m.) and continue action Saturday against Saint Joseph’s (12 noon) before finishing Sunday with a game against Kentucky (11 a.m.).
