BALTIMORE, Md. -- For the second consecutive day the University of Delaware baseball program will play a road game.

After dropping a 7-3 road contest to LaSalle yesterday, the Blue Hens (15-11, 3-3 CAA) will look to get back in the win column Wednesday night at UMBC (7-11, 2-1 America East). First pitch from Alumni Field is slated for 6:00 p.m.

Earlier in the season, Delaware defeated the Retrievers 17-6 at Bob Hannah Stadium. In that game the Hens scored six runs off of projected UMBC starter Mitchell Wilson. Today’s Blue Hens starter Matt Hornich pitched six innings of two-run ball in the team’s earlier matchup.

Week in Review:

Delaware got off to a slow start in yesterday’s road loss to LaSalle, falling behind 7-0 after six innings of play. The Hens were able to add runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth, but could not find the clutch hit.

In the loss reliever Kyle Hinton pitched four innings allowing just two earned runs, and Jordan Glover hit his seventh home run of the season.

Last weekend the Hens split a doubleheader vs. William & Mary on Saturday, falling 8-2 in the opener before pulling out an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.

William & Mary used a four-run first inning to take control in the opener while the nightcap featured a pair of first-inning home runs by senior catcher Nick Tierno and sophomore first baseman Nick Patten.

James Meeker pitched three innings of solid relief to earn his third victory of the season and Ron Marinaccio closed things out with two solid innings for the win.

Delaware won the rubber-match on Sunday with a thrilling 5-4 victory in 11 innings.

The Tribe jumped out to a 4-0 lead early before the Hens rallied with three runs in eighth and one in the ninth – on an RBI triple by Kevin Mohollen - to send the game into extra frames.

Delaware won it in the 11th when backup catcher Tyler Callender doubled with one out and scored on a walk-off single by Mohollen. Burk FitzPatrick went four scoreless innings on the mound to earn the win.  

Scouting the Foes:

UMBC comes into Wednesday night’s matchup riding a four game winning streak.  After starting the season 1-9, the Retrievers have won five out of their last seven games.

Last weekend UMBC took a doubleheader from Mount St. Mary’s. In the sweep the Retrievers scored 33 runs, taking the first game 19-7 and the nightcap 14-1.

On the year, UMBC Is batting .277 on the year and are led by Collin Stack who is batting .310.

All-Time Series:

Delaware leads the all-time series between the two teams 38-13. The Blue Hens have won the last five matchups.
