• THE WEEK[END]THAT WAS: The Blue Hens enter this week coming off an impressive three-game sweep of in-state rival Delaware State. The weekend started a day late, as game one was played Saturday afternoon. Righty Nick Spadafino took the start for Delaware (6.0 IP, 2ER) and received a no-decision. Five seventh-inning runs were the difference for UD, who held on for a 9-5 victory. Sunday brought two more victories for the home squad, as UD defeated DSU 9-0 and 11-4 (only seven innings) to complete the sweep. In Sunday’s opener, Kyle Hinton fired seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball, striking out 10. The outing lowered his ERA to 1.59 this season. In the nightcap, freshman Billy Sullivan IV struck out eight Hornets in an abbreviated four-inning start. Shortstop Vinny Vaccone (5-for-6, HR, 3 RBI, 4 Runs), outfielder Kyle Baker (3 2B, 5 RBI) and outfielder Kevin Mohollen (2 2B, 3 RBI) did the lion share of the damage for the Hens who improve to 25-4 in their last 29 home contests.

• HIT THE ROAD…. JIM?: Head coach Jim Sherman and the Blue Hens will play their seventh road game of the season so far. Delaware is 2-4 this season on the road. Following the contest at Maryland, UD will be open an eight-game homestand (longest of the season).

• NEW HENS ON THE BLOCK: Touting 13 newcomers this season, the new additions to the Delaware attack led the charge this weekend. JUCO transfer Matt Rykaczewski broke out for UD, hitting 4-for-8 with four runs scored and a pair of RBI. He wasn’t alone, however, as former Mercer County CC teammates Erik Bowren (.571 AVG, six runs scored) and Vaccone (.556 AVG, HR, four runs scored) also produced for Delaware.

• BATS COME ALIVE IN THE DAY: The Blue Hens bats came alive this past weekend. The Hens banged out 35 hits over the three games and four players hit at least .500 (Baker, Bowren, Rykaczewski and Vaccone) for the weekend. As a team, the Blue Hens hit .368 with 14 extra-base hits. Delaware has scored an average of 6.8 runs per game in day games (start time earlier than 4 p.m.) this season.

• BEHIND ENEMY LINES: The Terps enter Tuesday on a five-game winning streak, having outscored opponents 39-11 over that span. This past weekend, UMD defeated Radford (11-4), #24 Coastal Carolina (7-6) and Ball State (13-1). Kevin Biondic and Nick Dunn have led the Terps offensively this season batting .310 and .297 respectively. Tuesday’s projected starter Mark DiLuia has pitched to a 4.00 ERA this season having struck out 10 batters in 9.0 innings pitched.
