Another exciting year of University of Delaware men’s lacrosse commences this afternoon here at Delaware Stadium as the Blue Hens play host to Bucknell University in this longtime rivalry between former East Coast Conference foes.  

Delaware embarks on its 70th season of lacrosse today and does so just two days after longtime Blue Hen head coaching legend Bob Shillinglaw announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2017 campaign. See full story HERE

One of the most successful coaches in the history of collegiate lacrosse, Coach Shillinglaw has led the Blue Hens for the last 38 seasons and has guided UD to 303 victories, six NCAA Tournament appearances, and 16 conference championships during that span.

His 327 total collegiate victories ranks No. 7 among all active head coaches and No. 4 among active NCAA Division I coaches. His 639 career coaching appearances (today will be his 599th at UD) is by far the most in the history of college lacrosse. He has also coached numerous All-American and all-conference players and has mentored many current college coaches.

» Delaware leads the all-time series between the two schools by a wide 25-6 margin, but Bucknell has won three of the last four meetings, including a 13-5 win in both team’s season opener last year in Lewisburg, Pa.
» Four of the last five meetings have been decided by two goals or less, including Delaware’s 12-11 comeback win here at Delaware Stadium in 2015.
» In last year’s game, Bucknell’s Will Sands scored three times and Jaret Witzal won 15 of 21 faceoffs. Paul Major had two goals for Hens.
» In the 2015 game, Delaware rallied after being down 5-0 after one quarter and trailing 7-3 halftime. Delaware won on Tom Holland’s fourth goal of the game with 4:09 left.

» Delaware, which returns six of its top 10 scorers and eight players who started at least nine games, will be looking to improve upon last season’s 5-10 mark and advance to the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2014.
» Bucknell, which earned votes in the pre-season USILA Coaches Top 20 poll, is coming off a 10-5 record in 2016 when the Bison went 5-3 in the Patriot League and advanced to the PL semifinals. The » Bison, who open their 50th season, have posted nine winning season over the last 10 campaigns and were picked to finish No. 3 in the PL this season.
» Delaware graduate student and middie Steve DeLargy was named to the All-CAA preseason team in a vote of the league head coaches.
» Bucknell’s Sands, who led the team in scoring in 2016 (36 goals-28 assists), is a pre-season All-American.
» Delaware’s Major is the team’s leading active career scorer with 47 points on 37 goals and 10 assists.
» Delaware standout middie Jackson Finigan, who suffered a season-ending injury in last year’s opener vs. Bucknell, will also miss this season due to an injury.
» Delaware enters the 2017 season needing just four victories to reach 500 wins in school history (496-447-3 since 1948).
» The Blue Hens will play nine home games this season at Delaware Stadium, including visits from No. 10 Navy (Feb. 18), No. 16 Rutgers (Mar. 25), and No. 12 Towson (Apr. 25) for the home finale.
» Delaware has selected Finigan, Brian Pickup, Carson Scott, and Will Hirschmann to serve as captains this spring.
