ELKTON, Md. – The Blue Hens snapped a two-match losing streak in dominating fashion Saturday evening as Delaware cruised to the 7-0 victory over Bucknell at Elkton Indoor Tennis.

UD began the evening strong by sweeping the team doubles point.  Freshman Brooke Pilkington (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry) and junior Arielle Shuren (Montebello, N.Y./Suffern) collected the first win with a 6-3 decision over Danielle Gannon and Melissa Parks in No. 3 doubles.

Sophomores Sarah Hall (West Orange, N.J./Mount Saint Dominic Academy) and Sara Komer (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) clinched the point in the second flight as the duo posted their third straight win of the season by defeating Paige Leavy and Emilie Bush, 6-3. 

The Hens competed the sweep in the top flight as graduate student Denny LaMachia (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) and junior Amanda Studnicki (Normal, Ill./Normal West) collected the 7-6 (6) victory against Michele Urbinati and Lauren Fishbein.

Pilkington continued her stellar rookie campaign and led off singles action with her fifth straight win of the year by edging Ubrinati, 6-1, 6-0, in the top flight.

Komer followed with her seventh consecutive victory with the 6-1, 6-0 decision in No. 2 singles over Fishbein.

Delaware captured the team win in the fifth flight as Hall collected her 10th victory of the year by downing Mishi Papich, 6-1, 6-1.

LaMachia continued the dominance in No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win versus Madeline Melch while sophomore Annie Jaskulski (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) fought for the 6-3, 3-6, 12-10 victory over Madeline Melch in the fourth spot.

Studnicki wrapped play in the sixth slot with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-4 decision over Parks.

With the win, the Hens improve to 3-4 on the year while Bucknell falls to 5-2 overall.

“The evening started off strong with all of our doubles teams playing well.  I’m really pleased with the way we closed out all the sets in which we had the lead, which bodes well for future matches.  Kudos to Annie for her persistence in winning an incredibly close third set tiebreaker and to Amanda for rebounding and playing a focused third set breaker.
