NEWARK, Del. -- Senior Cortney Barry, who led the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team to a 1-2 week by capturing two first place finishes and two third place showings, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Jan. 31.
Barry, an honor student as a marketing major from Laurel, Md. (Reservoir High School), started the week by leading the Blue Hens (8-6) to a 165-80 road win at host Widener University where Delaware broke seven pool records and recorded 10 first place finishes on the women's side. A team co-captain, Barry captured the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.27 and placed third in 100-yard freestyle with a clocking of 55.67.
On Saturday, Delaware honored Barry as one of six seniors on the squad but the Blue Hens dropped a pair of hard-fought dual meets to UMBC (175-124) and to Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary (155-136). She captured the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:09.99 and then placed third in the 500 freestyle with a clocking of 5:06.27.
Delaware will continue action Feb. 11-12 at the Terrapin Invitational at the University of Maryland leading up to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Feb. 23-26 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va.
