NEWARK, Del. -- Sophomore sprinter Vicky Caruso, who earned All-East honors in two events to lead the University of Delaware women's indoor track & field team at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Indoor Championships over the weekend at the Reggie Lewis Center in Bostosn, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Mar. 7.

Caruso, a sophomore from Stockholm, N.J. (Walkill Valley High School), capped an outstanding, record-breaking indoor season as she placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.46 and then teamed with sophomore Nijah Dupiche and seniors Kristi Cox and Asia Hollis to post an eighth place showing in the 4 x 400 meter relay with a time of 3:47.43.
Both finishes earned Caruso All-East honors and helped her build on a season in which she captured 13 individual and relay meet titles and set two school records during the 2011 campaign.
Caruso also earned All-East honors as a freshman in 2010 when she finished seventh in the 200 meters. She also teamed with Hollis, Cox, and since graduated Cristine Marquez to earn All-East honors in the 4 x 400 meters with sixth place showing.
Her fondest memory of the 2010 outdoor season was competing at NCAA regionals at North Carolina A&T.
“It was cool to run against big name schools and some of the most talented athletes in the country," said Caruso. "I love my team and have made so many friends. We work really hard and have become pretty successful the past couple years.”
Caruso will begin spring season competition March 19 at the West Chester (Pa.) Collegiate Invitational. She is excited for the upcoming season and hopes to qualify not only for regionals again but nationals as well.
She credits her high school coach and her parents as her biggest influences in her life on and off the track. She credits her coach for providing guidance in her college decision process.
“She basically got me into Delaware," said Caruso. "She contacted schools and helped me with my applications and setting up visits."
Caruso’s family has been with her every step of her track career as well. She admires their dedication to her track life.
“They still go to every meet and have always been there for me when I needed them," she said. "I thank my coaches and parents for being supportive and extremely valuable in my growth as an athlete and a person."
Caruso has now won the Best of the Blue Hens weekly award four times in her young career at Delaware and is honored for the recognition.
