NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware sophomore sprinter Vicky Caruso, who became the first Blue Hen women's outdoor track & field runner to capture an individual Eastern College Athletic Conference title in nearly 20 years on Sunday, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for May 16.

Caruso captured the 400 meter dash title to highlight the final day of the IC4A and ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships Sunday afternoon at Princeton University’s Weaver Stadium.
Caruso, a sophomore from Stockholm, N.J. (Walkill Valley High School), was one of seven University of Delaware competitors who took part in the final day of the championships.
The Delaware women placed tied for 28th in the team standings with 10 points. Duke won the team title with 67.75 points followed by Virginia, Connecticut, Albany, Cornell, Syracuse, James Madison, Pittsburgh, Long Island, and Villanova in the top 10.
Caruso, who also had the top time in Saturday’s preliminaries, continued her outstanding weekend as she captured the 400 meter title with a time of 54.08 on Sunday, storming past Morgan State’s Tanisha Kendrick, who finished second with a time of 54.65. Caruso becomes the first Blue Hen woman to capture an ECAC title since Alicia Giuliano won the 10,000 meters in 1992.
Already Delaware’s record-holder in the event with a time of 53.87 earlier this season, Caruso won the Colonial Athletic Association 400 meter title earlier this month. She also earns All-East honors thanks to her top eight finish.
She will compete at the NCAA East Regionals on May 26-28 at Indiana University.
