Athlete of the Week: Corey Crispell (Baseball)

NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware senior pitcher Cory Crispell, who allowed just one run in the University of Delaware’s 4-1 win at Georgia State on Saturday, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending May 14.

The senior right-handed from Hatboro, Pa. (Hatboro-Horsham High School) pitched eight innings, giving up only one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Crispell’s has gone 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last two Colonial Athletic Association starts.

Crispell is 6-3 on the season with a 3.47 ERA in 80.1 innings with 48 strikeouts in 13 games including 11 starts). Crispell leads the Blue Hens with wins and innings pitched, and sits near the top the list for ERA.

For his efforts, Crispell was also named the CAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week, becoming the fifth Blue Hen baseball player to be honored this season for head coach Jim Sherman and his staff.

With the win over Georgia State, the Blue Hens qualified for the CAA Baseball Tournament for the first time since 2009. The tournament will take place at James Madison University at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va from May 23-26.

The Blue Hens (26-23, 16-11 CAA) host Saint Joseph’s University on Tuesday, May 15, with a 3 p.m. first pitch at Bob Hannah Stadium, before hosting Northeastern during Senior Weekend for a three-game CAA series. The series opener begins Friday, May 18, at 3 p.m.
