NEWARK, Del. -- Junior quarterback Tim Donnelly, who was nearly flawless in leading the University of Delaware football team to a 45-0 victory over in-state rival Delaware State Saturday night, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Sept.19.
A native of Myrtle Beach, S. C. and a graduate of Stephen Decatur High School in Maryland, Donnelly completed his first seven passes of the game and finished hitting on 13 of 14 for 221 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 7 ranked Blue Hens (2-1) won their second straight contest and retained bragging rights in the state by winning the First State Cup as part of the Route One Rivalry.

“The success of this game showed us, as a team, how a great week of practice can translate to a game,” he said. “We set the standard with a great week of practice leading up to that game, and now have to challenge ourselves to match and exceed that in the upcoming weeks as we head into our CAA schedule.”
Donnelley received another award too as he was selected as the Nate Beasley Most Valuable Player of the game. The award, named in honor of the late Nate Beasley who earned All-American honors as a running back at Delaware after transferring from Delaware State, was presented for the first time Saturday night.
Donnelly fired a 43-yard scoring pass to tight end Colin Naugle to open the scoring and later added an 11-yard touchdown toss to wide receiver Nihja White. In addition, his 59-yard toss to White down to the DSU one-yard line, set up another UD touchdown. In all, Delaware's offense piled up 512 yards of total offense while Delaware State was held to just 112 yards and three turnovers.
A communications major at Delaware, Donnelly posted a passing pct. of .928 was the second highest in a single game in UD history. His mark was second only to Bill Vergantino, who started out 11 for 11 vs. Towson in 1992. In addition, his passing rating of 272.6 was the sixth best in UD single game history.
Donnelly said this achievement affected more than just him.
“It's a huge accomplishment for our entire offense, because everyone contributes to a stat like that, either in protections or by running routes and catching passes,” he said. “When you look at the history of Delaware football, the quarterback is one of the most storied positions, and to be mentioned along with Joe Flacco, Rich Gannon, Billy Vergantino, and all of the other great quarterbacks who have come through is an absolute honor.”
For the season, Donnelly has completed 41 of 51 passes for 454 yards and three touchdowns with just one interception. His passing rating of 170.66 leads all Colonial Athletic Association signal-callers.
Delaware will continue action this Saturday when the Blue Hens host CAA newcomer Old Dominion in the conference opener for both squads.
