Athlete of the Week: Paul Gallagher (MSwimming)

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware junior swimmer Paul Gallagher, who was a part of four first place finishes as the Blue Hen men's and women's swimming and diving teams sank Georgetown in the season opener Saturday, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending Oct. 8.

Gallagher, a sprint freestyle specialist from Linwood, N.J. and a graduate of St. Augustine High School, played a big part of a dominating effort Saturday as the Blue Hens opened their season with a 209-88 victory over Georgetown at Rawstrom Natatorium. The Delaware women captured 14 first place finishes on the way to a 223-77 win.

The Delaware men, led by head coach John Hayman, picked up 12 first place finishes led by Gallagher and Ryan Roberts, who each had four victories.

Gallagher teamed with Roberts, Clayton Clemens, and Cole Clark to win the 200 medley relay in 1:35.02 and joined Sihan Liu, Michael Moore, and Roberts in winning the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:10.19.

Individually, Gallagher won the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.72 and the 100 freestyle in a time of 47.35.

"Thank you to my coaches, especially our new sprint coach, Pablo Marmolejo, said Gallagher. "He has helped the sprint group already with his coaching and intense training. It will be a big year for UD men's swimming with a large freshman class led by a solid number of returning upperclassmen who have been successful at the conference meet in years past."

Last year as a sophomore, Gallagher placed fourth at the Colonial Athletic Association championships in the 400 freestyle relay, sixth in the 200 freestyle, ninth in the 100 freestyle, and 13th in the 50 freestyle.

Delaware will continue action this Saturday, Oct. 13, when they head to Fairfax, Va. to take on George Mason University at 1 p.m. McKay Natatorium is the site of the annual Colonial Athletic Association Championships to be held in February.
