Athlete of the Week: Joe Giacchino (Baseball)

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware outfielder Joe Giacchino, who had four hits and five RBIs in the Blue Hens 10-3 win over Colonial Athletic Association foe Northeastern Saturday, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending May 21.

Giacchino, a redshirt freshman from West Chester, Pa. (Malvern Prep), earned the award for the first time in his career. He was also named CAA Baseball Rookie of the Week for his efforts, becoming the sixth Blue Hen to be honored with a weekly award from the league.

His five hits and four RBIs led the offensive attack for the Blue Hens, who notched 16 hits during Senior Day. The Hens dropped contests to Northeastern on Friday and Sunday but still secured the No. 3 seed in this week's Colonial Athletic Association Tournament at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va.

The left-handed hitting Giacchino, an undeclared major at Delaware, has appeared 34 games this season with 16 starts and his batting .273, collecting 21 hits in 77 at bats. He has also scored 12 runs, knocked in 10 runs, and collected three doubles. He also drew two walks, had four stolen bases, and committed just thre errors in 40 chances in the outfield.

Delaware (27-25, 17-13 CAA) earned its seventh win in the month of May with the victory over Northeastern. The Blue Hens also received the No. 3 seed in the CAA Baseball Tournament. The tournament takes place May 23-26 at James Madison University at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Va. The winner of the double-elimination tournament earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

The Hens have qualified for the CAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 and their No. 3 seed is the highest since the 2007 campaign when Delaware advanced to the tournament title game.
