Athlete of the Week: Josh Hyman (Men's Swimming)

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware senior men's swimming and diving standout Josh Hyman, who led the Blue Hens to an easy victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe Drexel Saturday at Rawstrom Natatorium, National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 16.

Hyman, a senior co-captain and accounting major from Wilmington, Del. (Salesianum School), led the Blue Hens (4-3, 1-3 CAA) to a 214-86 win over Drexel as Delaware captured 15 first place finishes on the day.

The Hens celebrated Senior Day as they returned to their home pool for the first time since October and competed in their first scoring dual meet since mid-November.

Hyman, who won the Best of the Blue Hens weekly award for the first time in his career, captured four first place finishes on the day to lead the victory over the Dragons.

“Being able to lead my team with a few individual victories and support them on the relay truly means a lot to me,” Hyman said about his performance. “I have been swimming in this pool since I was around the age of 10 and I just wanted to make my last swims at the Carpenter Sports Building memorable ones. I was so excited that my family members were able to come and watch some of my last races as a UD swimmer.”

He won the 100 breaststroke (58.52), 200 breaststroke (2:08.18), and 200 individual medley (1:57.25) events and then teamed with Ryan Roberts, Cole Clark, and Paul Gallagher to win the 200 medley relay (1:33.80). Roberts also won four events during the meet to pace the Blue Hens.

In addition to the Delaware men, the Blue Hen women also picked up a victory vs. Drexel as they posted a 231-56 victory thanks to nine first place finishes. However, the Hens (5-3, 2-3 CAA) could not complete the sweep as they fell to Northeastern 151-149 on the final race of the day as part of the three-way meet. Northeastern does not sponsor men's swimming & diving.

Hyman holds three Delaware school records, setting standards in the 200 breaststroke (2:00.32), 200 individual medley (1:51.69), and 400 individual medley (3:56.03) last season.

He said the team is ready to step up to the challenge as the CAA championship approaches.

“We graduated a lot of talented seniors last season, so we lack some of the depth we had at the conference championships last year, but I feel that this team has so much individual talent and potential for this year’s meet,” he said. “We have very strong athletes on both the swimming and diving sides and we are depending on swimmers from every class to ensure we perform up to our potential.”

Delaware will return to the pool Jan. 26 when both the Blue Hen men and women host Widener University at 6 p.m.
