NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware junior pitcher Chenxi Jiao, who led the Blue Hen softball team to two key victories over rival Drexel this past weekend to clinch a post-season playoff berth, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week award for the period ending May 7.

athlete photoJiao, a history major from Beijing, China, improved to 8-23 on the season with the two victories. This is the first time she has won the Best of the Blue Hens award in her career.

The first-year righthander allowed three earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts after pitching all 10 innings in the Blue Hens' regular season finale. With that victory, and James Madison’s 7-6 extra inning win over Towson the same day, Delaware clinched the fourth seed in the Colonial Athletic Association championships for the team’s second consecutive trip.

She also picked up a victory over Drexel on Friday as she keyed the Hens' 2-1 victory with a complete game effort. She allowed just four hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out six batters.

Jiao has recorded two shutouts for the Blue Hens this season. She tossed four-hit shutout in the Blue Hens 2-0 win over Norfolk State on March 17. She allowed just two singles and two doubles, struck out seven and walked two for her first victory as Blue Hen.

She again pitched a four-hit shutout on April 28, in a 4-0 win against UNCW. She allowed four hits and no walks while striking out seven for her second shutout of the year. She is the only Blue Hen to pitch a shutout this season.

Jiao leads the Blue Hens in virtually every pitching category this season, including wins (8), earned run average (3.31), innings pitched (169), and strikeouts (121).

The No. 4 seed Blue Hens will face top-seeded Hofstra on the first day of the double elimination CAA tournament starting Wednesday in Hempstead, N.Y. James Madison is the second seed while Georgia State is the third seed.
