NEWARK, Del. -- Junior attackman Grant Kaleikau, who put in an impresse offensive display in leading the University of Delaware men's lacrsosse squad to a 7-6 upset over No. 4 ranked Hofstra Saturday at Delaware Stadium, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Mar. 21.

Kaleikau, a history major from Germantown, Md. (Watkins Mill High School/Bridgton Academy), keyed the upset win for the Blue Hens, who snapped a two-game losing streak and knocked off the rival Pride for the first time since the 2007 season and was honored that he was nominated at the Athlete of the Week.
“I know a lot of great athletes have come through here and to be recognized for something like this feels great," said Kaleikau.
Kaleikau has treasured the relationships he’s built on the team with teammates and coaches since he first put on a Blue Hen uniform
“Since the day I got here my teammates and coaches have done nothing but supported and pushed me to be a better player” said Kaleikau. “The guys I've played with and especially the guys in my class are like brothers to me.”
Delaware, the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions, improved to 5-3 as the Hens also won their CAA opener by knocking off the pre-season favorite Hofstra. Hofstra was the highest ranked opponent to fall to the Blue Hens since Delaware knocked off No. 3 Virginia in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 on the way to the NCAA national semifinals.
Kaleikau enjoyed a big day for the Hens Saturday as he scored twice and dished out three assists to match his career-high for points and had a hand in five of the seven goals scored by Delaware. He also scooped up a team-high four groundballs. He scored Delaware first goal of the game with 6:26 left in the opening quarter before feeding John Mills on back-to-back goals in the second quarter to give Delaware the lead for good at 3-2.
Kaleikau scored seven seconds into the second half to give Delaware a 4-2 lead and his assist on a goal by Nick Diachenko with 12:06 remaining in the game gave the Hens much-needed insurance. Kaleikau and the team were extremely excited after the game, but they know that their season’s success isn’t captured in one game.
“Beating a conference rival is huge, but repeating as CAA champs is the number one goal right now.” he said.
Kaleikau may have not even been on the field against Hofstra if it weren’t for his brother Adam. His brother led him to the game of lacrosse.
“I grew up playing ice hockey but when he started to play lacrosse he really encouraged me to start playing” said Kaleikau. “He helped me buy my first stick and taught me how to catch and throw.”
Delaware will continue CAA action this Saturday, March 26, when the Hens host rival Towson at 1 p.m. in Delaware Stadium.
