NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware junior women's lacrosse standout Kalyn McDonough, who helped the Blue Hen women's lacrosse squad close out the season with a 9-6 victory over Old Dominion on Sunday, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Apr. 25.

major with a minor in black American studies, led the Blue Hens to a 1-1 week as Delaware suffered a heart-breaking 11-10 triple overtime setback to William & Mary Friday night before bouncing back with a 9-6 victory over Old Dominion on Sunday.
In the win over Old Dominion, McDonough dished out an assist and registered one draw control.
McDonough’s best experience as a Blue Hen happened just a few days ago as the team hosted a fundraiser for the B+ foundation in their game against William & Mary last Friday night.
The foundation came about through McDonough’s cousin’s death and she was excited to have her friends and family watch her play.
“To have my whole family there watching as well as the whole team in B+ shirts was amazing.” said McDonough. “We were able to raise more awareness about the B+ Foundation and its cause, and remembering Andrew that night was very special.”
McDonough has grown extremely close with her teammates, not only because of being on the team, but also by seeing their support of the B+ foundation.
“I have made so many great friends through lacrosse that I know will be lifelong,” she said.
The Hens finished their first season under new head coach Kateri Linville with an 8-9 record and a 3-4 slate in Colonial Athletic Association, barely missing a spot in the four-team league post-season tournament. Five of their losses came by three goals or less.
McDonough, who hails from Kennett Square, Pa. (Unionville High School), led the Hens in the tough loss to William & Mary as she scored three goals, dished out an assist, scooped up two groundballs, caused two turnovers, and won three draw controls.
She found her calling for playing lacrosse after her middle school coach, Stacy Remphrey, encouraged her to play lacrosse when McDonough was involved with softball.
“She made the game really fun," stated McDonough. "If not for her, I never would have played.”
McDonough also credits her older brother, Robert, for giving her the critical thinking skills that would help on and off the field during her collegiate career.
“He always helps me to put thinks into perspective," said McDonough. "And that makes me strive to work hard everyday.”
McDonough is looking to enter AmeriCorps after she graduates from Delaware. She has aspirations to coach, but the most essential aspect of her future is that she wants to work with children in some capacity.
For the season, she started all 17 games, ranked sixth on the team in scoring with 21 points on 14 goals and seven assists while leading the team in draw controls (36), ranking second in caused turnovers (18), and third in groundballs (25).
