NEWARK, Del. -- Senior Kevin McLister, who captured medalist honors in leading the University of Delaware golf team to the team title at the Villanova University Invitational Monday, has earned the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Apr. 4 and considers it an amazing honor.
McLister shot a three-under par for the tournament to earn medalist honors while the Blue Hens also captured the team title at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Villanova.
McLister relished the team’s win in the tournament because of the collective effort brought forth by the Blue Hens.
According to McLister, “There is no better feeling than knowing that our five guys were better than every other five-man team in the field. We are probably the closest team that you will find."
McLister, who shot a course record five under par 66 during Sunday’s first round at the par 71, 7,009-yard course at White Manor Country Club, followed with a 73 on Monday to finish at three-under par 139 and record a two-shot victory. He earned medalist honors for the third time in his Blue Hen career, as he also posted victories at the Scotty Duncan Invitational and Andrew Geyer Memorial Classic in the fall of 2009.
McLister says he and his teammates enjoyed the experience and were glad their efforts paid off at the tournament.
“We were excited to hold the trophy and to know that nobody could beat us” said McLister. “We’re excited that we are playing well going into conferences in two weeks.”
A finance major from Leesburg, Va. (Loudoun County High School), McLister now ranks second on the squad with a 73.07 stroke average in 15 rounds of action. After a par and bogey on his first two holes of the day, McLister found his game by posting six pars and a birdie on the fifth hole to finish the front nine at even par 35. He fell to three over for the round through 13, but rebounded to birdie 15 and 17 to finish the back nine in 38, two over par.
McLister is not looking to end his competitive golfing career this spring at Delaware, but hopes to carry on his talents into the professional ranks.
“It has always been my dream and it is a great feeling that I will soon compete with the best golfers in the world," he said.
He is not the first golfer in his family to tee it up for the Blue Hens. His brother Joe (a 2007 graduate) holds many school records for Delaware and currently is playing in tournaments all across the country.
McLister credits his father’s and brother’s influence for his success on the links.
“My dad introduced me to the game and has helped me become the player I am today.” said McLister. “Joe is the hardest working golfer that I know, which inspires me to do the same.”
Delaware, which also captured the Navy Fall Classic on September 11-12, earned its second team title of the season. The Blue Hens followed up Sunday’s 290 score by posting a 289 on the final day to finish at 579, edging Towson by two strokes. Villanova was the only other school in the 20-team field to break 600, as the host Wildcats placed third at 596.
Delaware is back in action this Friday through Sunday, when the Blue Hens compete at the Rutherford Invitational hosted by Penn State University.
