NEWARK, Del. -- Brandon Paul, who led the resurgent University of Delaware men's soccer team to a pair of shutout victories last week, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for Nov. 1.
Paul, a sophomore criminal justice major from Flemington, N.J. (St. Benedict's Prep), closed out an eventful week as he also was named the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Player of the week and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the Week. He became the first player in UD history to earn the ECAC award.
Last week, Paul recorded two shutouts in conference play to help keep the Blue Hens postseason hopes alive, blanking Towson and UNC Wilmington 1-0. He made 13 saves during the week, including seven against UNCW.
Arguably the save of the week came vs. the Seahawks with just 19 seconds left in the game on Saturday.
After a UNCW player was fouled, the Seahawks’ Shaun Utterson took the ensuing set piece, aiming just below the cross bar. But with a diving save, Paul pushed the ball over the net to preserve the victory and the shutout.
Paul and the Blue Hens look to keep their playoff hopes alive as they take on Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday Nov. 7 in the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Delaware Mini Stadium.
