NEWARK, Del. -- Ivana Petrich (at right in photo), who made Senior Day special on Sunday afternoon by posting her school-record 75th career singles victory for the Blue Hen women's tennis team, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Apr. 18

Petrich, a senior from Calgary, Alberta, Canada (National Sport School), led the Blue Hen women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over NCAA Division III power Johns Hopkins University in Sunday's regular season finale at the Delaware Field House.
The win helped the Hens improve to 12-4 on the season heading into this week's Colonial Athletic Association Tournament in Norfolk, Va.
An honor student as a finance major with an international business minor at Delaware, Petrich posted a 6-2, 6-3 straight set victory over Johns Hopkins Ariel Several at the No. 4 spot to post her 75th career singles victory, breaking the previous UD mark of 74 set by Erin Kamen in 1996-2000. Delaware head coach Laura (LeRoy) Travis previously held the record with 73 victories in 1985-89).
Petrich has developed an extremely close relationship with her teammates. They supported her last season when she had to sit out the entire campaign because of a stress fracture. She sees them like a second family.
“This group of eight girls is so close-knit that it's like practicing and training with my best friends every day, ” said Petrich.
Petrich was a double winner on the day as she also teamed with Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom to register an 8-4 win over Hopkins' Courtney Boger and Brooke Pottish at the No. 3 doubles spot. The win wasn't the only one on the week for Petrich, who posted a singles and a doubles victory in Delaware's CAA victory over Drexel on Friday. She is now 19-12 in singles action this season and 75-25 for her career.
"It’s really a nice way to wrap up my career here at Delaware,” said Petrich of the victory. “It was senior day, I beat the record, but when you’re out on the court, you can’t really think about that. You just play one point at a time and fight for the wins. It was the icing on the cake.”
Emotions were high the entire day, starting moments before her match and all the way to the senior banquet that night.
“I felt a rollercoaster of emotions on Senior Day, from nerves before the match, to enjoying the win, to bursting into tears at the senior banquet.” said Petrich
Growing up, Petrich was influenced by her father at an early age into playing the game of tennis. She still remembers when she held her first racquet at age five and how her father built a tennis court in the back of her house for her to play the game she has grown to love whenever she wanted.
Although Petrich does not have aspirations of taking her talents to the professional ranks, she wants to continue playing the game simply for fun. She has developed such great relationships at Delaware that she is looking to make the United States her permanent residence.
“My goal is to do everything I can to live and work in the U.S. after I graduate so that I can stay near the people I've grown so close to in the last four years,” she said.
Delaware has earned the No. 6 seed for this week's CAA Tournament hosted by Old Dominion. The Hens will take on No. 11 seed George Mason on Thursday, Apr. 21 at 2 p.m. Should the Blue Hens win, they would face No. 3 Georgia State on Friday at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals continue on Friday and Saturday.
