NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware sophomore running back Andrew Pierce, who helped the Blue Hen football team bounce back into the victory column with a 35-30 victory over Colonial Athletic Association rival and 13th-ranked Towson Saturday night is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Oct. 31.

Pierce, a fitness management major from Bridgeton, N.J. (Cumberland Regional High School), enjoyed one of his best performances of the season in the road win over Towson as he carried the ball a career-high 34 times for a season-high 158 yards and scored three touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner on a five-yard burst with two minutes left in the third quarter.
For his efforts, Pierce was also named the CAA Offensive Player of the Week, earning weekly CAA honors for a record eighth time in his brief career.
Delaware, ranked No. 16 in this week's The Sports Network Top 25 poll, snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory and handed the Tigers (6-2, 4-1 CAA) their first conference loss and first home loss of the season. Delaware has now defeated Towson five straight times.
The Blue Hens are idle this week as they prepare for their next outing Nov. 12 when they host Richmond for Homecoming in the final home game of the regular season at Delaware Stadium.
“This was a great win against Towson since they are a good football team that hadn’t lost a CAA game,” he said. “For us to get that win was big we worked hard all week.”
Pierce, a 2010 All-American as a freshman when he was named the CAA Rookie of the Year, scored three times in the win over Towson as he also added scoring runs of 23 yards and 13 yards during the contest. He also caught a pass for nine yards.
For the season, Pierce has now carried the ball 205 times for 955 yards and 13 touchdowns while averaging 4.7 yards per carry and 106.1 yards rushing per game. He also leads the team in receptions, hauling in 40 passes for 202 yards. He is the only player in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision who leads his team in both rushing yards and pass receptions.
He ranks No. 2 in the CAA in and No. 14 nationally in rushing yards per game while also ranking No. 2 in the league and No. 15 nationally in scoring with 8.7 points per game. He moved into No. 6 on the all-time UD career rushing list vs. Towson on Saturday and has now logged 2,610 total rushing yards in his two-year career.
Pierce said the team plans to bring their best efforts into the last two regular-season games.
“The goal is to take each game like a championship game and leave the seniors with a great season,” he said.
