NEWARK, Del. -- Sophomore Lindsay Prettyman, who led the Blue Hen women's cross country team to a second place team finish at the University of Delaware Blue & Gold Invitational Saturday morning, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week honor for Oct. 17.

Prettyman, a sophomore exercise science major from Newark, Del. (St. Mark's High School), led the Blue Hens for the fourth time in five races this season as she covered the six kilometer White Clay Creek State Park Course in a time of 24:02.15 to place third overall in the race.
Her teammate, freshman Nicole Daly, was right behind in fifth place with a time of 24:10.17 as Delaware put four runners in the top 10.
“It was great to be able to help the team represent ourselves well on our home course,” Prettyman said. “Since the course was so muddy Coach (Jim) Fischer told us not to focus on time, but just on passing as many girls as we could, and I think we all did that really well. This was a total team effort.
Maryland's Julie Fricke won the overall individual title, finishing the race in a time of 22:10.40.
The Blue Hens placed four runners among the top 10 finishers and posted a team score of 38, just five points behind Division I team champion University of Maryland. Mt. St. Mary’s was third with 87 points followed by Maryland-Eastern Shore, Morgan State, and Howard.
Prettyman said she transitioned well from freshman year and looks forward to a strong rest of the season.
“Last year was my first season ever running cross country, so this year I know a lot more about the sport and feel like I'm more fit,” she said. “Since our team is so young this season, I'm excited to see what we can do when it really counts, because we'll only keep getting better.”
Prettyman has enjoyed an outstanding season thus far this fall, leading the Blue Hens with a 12th place finish at the season-opening Maryland-Eastern Shore Invitational, finishing 33rd at the Fordham Invitational, and seventh at the Delaware Invitational.
Delaware, led by head coach Jim Fischer will take this week off in preparation of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships which will be held at Georgia State University on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Blue Hens will be looking to improve upon last season's seventh place team finish while Prettyman will be out to better her 58th place finish from a year ago.
