Athlete of the Week: Ryan Roberts (Men's Swimming)

NEWARK, Del. -- University of Delaware men's swimming standout Ryan Roberts, who won his second straight 200-yard backstroke conference title and set two program records at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships this past weekend, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending Feb. 27.

Roberts, a junior finance major from Emmaus, Pa. (Emmaus HS.), earned the award for the first time this season and the third time in his career. He was outstanding at the four-day meet held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., leading Delaware to a fifth place finish. UNCW captured its 11th straight team title at the meet.

He won his second career individual title in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:46.78, simultaneously breaking his own record set the year before. Roberts totaled 52 points, the fourth-highest amount at the meet, and the largest point total by a Delaware swimmer.

“It felt incredible to win the 200 backstroke again this year,” he said. “I was more nervous for it this year because of all the high expectations I had for myself. I knew all the hard work and hundreds of hours I spent practicing this year would pay off in the end and I'm extremely happy with all my swims.”

He also earned the second spot on the podium in the 100-yard backstroke, missing first place by .01 seconds, and was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Roberts again broke his own program record, this time in the 200-yard freestyle as he cruised to a time of 1:38.41 in the preliminary heats. He was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay that placed sixth, and 400-yard freestyle relay that finished fifth.

Roberts now has two individual conference titles, one relay title and three school records in his career.

He said this season ended on a high note, despite some adversity in the beginning.

“We struggled through some meets early on in the year and that hurt our confidence," he said. "But our captains did a great job helping us all bounce back, we continued to work hard the rest of the season, and we ended up having a very good CAA meet. It is sad to see our seniors go, but next year I have very high goals for myself and the team as a whole.”
