NEWARK, Del. - University of Delaware freshman golfer Niño Rosal, who led the University of Delaware golf team to a third place finish in the season-opener at the George Washington Intercollegiate Invitational this weekend, is the National 5 & 10 Stores Inc. Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for the period ending March 19.
This is the first time Rosal, a biological sciences major from Camden, Del. (Ceasar Rodney), won Best of the Blue Hens award in his career.
“It felt great to get off to a good start, and I'm happy to see our practices are paying off,” he said about the season-opener. “We're feeling very optimistic towards the rest of the season, so hopefully we can improve on a third place finish.”
He carded a three over par 75 on Saturday on the par 72, 6,834-yard course at Bear Trap Dunes Golf Club, good enough to tie for fourth place in the individual standings with a four over par 71-74-75-220.
On the first day of the invitational, he shot a career-low one under par 71 during his first round and followed with a two over 74 during his second to finish the day with a one over par 71-74-145.
The Blue Hens finished the tournament with a team score of 882. Penn won the invitational with a score of 866, while Boston College was 15 shots behind in second place at 881. Delaware was close behind at 882, George Washington came in fourth at 895, and Binghamton was fifth at 897.
Rosal leads the Hens with a 74.40 stroke average through the fall and spring seasons. In the fall, he was third with a 76.00 stroke average behind Stephen Scialo and Ben Conroy. Rosal competed at the Navy Invitational in the fall in his first career match for Delaware as an individual and firing a seven over par 78 on Sunday and finishing tied for 38th with a 10 over par 74-78-152.
“My goal for the season is to keep my scores consistent and hopefully help the team get a few wins,” he said. “With a bunch of tournaments left on the schedule, I also want to make sure I don't get ahead of myself, and focus on each event.”
The Hens return to the green on March 25-27 to compete at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at the Kingsmill Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va.
